Not getting talked about #1

A reader recently encouraged me to follow-up on the idea of occasionally posting about Global Warming news or events that Anthony Watts’ blog chooses to ignore. It’s tough keeping up with the posts Anthony spews out, but now and then I recognize a small patch of enlightening silence. Here’s one now.

During my recent travels NOAA released a large peer-reviewed study published as a Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society supplement. There’s an excellent online copy with some interactive data-sets too. Anthony Watts has been strangely silent about it even though it was widely covered in the popular media:

The 2009 State of the Climate report released today draws on data for 10 key climate indicators that all point to the same finding: the scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable. More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to the report, which confirms that the past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years.

NOAA's ten indicators of a warming world.

It’s all good fun getting attention by shouting about this meaningless contrary trend or that one, or by accusing climatologists of being hostile while ignoring your own vituperation. But when the evidence is lined up in a row like this… Best to keep your mouth shut and hope that your supporters forget about it.

Of course Anthony could be busy on the back-channels helping to craft a useful spin. “Whitewash”? “Data manipulation”? “Conspiracy”? We’ll see.

  1. Wasn’t A.W. involved in meteorology? Has he abandoned his professional links?

    The world wants to know.

[“Meteorologists” of the television variety seem to be inclined to dismiss climate risks, so I’m sure he’s getting lots of backslaps from them. Scientific meteorologists on the other hand… – Ben]

  2. Despite his logorrhea, it’s interesting to note when Anthony *doesn’t* write about something. It’s quite telling – not that we don’t already know he’s a moron.

  3. “Rebuttal to NOAA’s ‘State of the Climate’ sales brochure” WUWT (Aug8,2010)

WUWT’s respone to ‘State of the Climate’ is late and lame…

Anthony only discusses the Highlights section, but his link is to the slow-to-load entire paper. He doesn’t want his readers to see the TEN INDICATOR GRAPHS shown together in the Highlights…

ARCTIC MINIMUM SEA ICE EXTENT……….Anthony does not address the actual extent represented on the graph: ~7,200,000km2(1979) vs ~5,400,000km2(2009).

He argues that his visuals look healthier than their visuals.

He is partial to Cryosphere Today’s “sea ice extent” comparison visuals. These use a darker color code, with a lavendar shade until the sea ice concentration gets down to ~70%. CT’s DAILY sea ice concentration maps, leave the lavendar shades when down to ~95%, so it is much more colorful.

SNOW COVER……….is addressed in the traditional WUWTian manner. The given MARCH-APRIL Snow cover graph (on page3) is flat until 1980, after which it declines. This is countered with a WINTER Snow Cover graph.

US vs GLOBAL TEMPERATURES……….The last is a bit of a muddle. But a signature is a signature. When US temperatures are being mixed into a global analysis, we jump to the ending.
