“Some reactions to the CLOUD experiment” (2011-08-25). Strangely Anthony Watts’ selection of “reactions” to the preliminary results of CERN’s CLOUD experiment are all denialist or sympathetic. “Some” means “the ones we like” I guess. Just another day in Anthony’s cramped mind…
Wow! Most interesting post you’ve had.
I read Real Climate about CLOUD, also.
Mostly, I *suspect* the CLOUD folk are correct: it’s the sun.
(Doesn’t Piers Corbyn make a zillion bucks working for the banksters who bet on corn futures, etc, by telling them what the weather is *really* gonna be? ….because NOAA, the Met Office, etc. etc. can’t predict the seasons, but he does, year after year?)

As I posted below, they are saying no such thing.
As for Piers Corbyn, he’s a fraud. His “methodology” – which he has never revealed and refuses to discuss in anything but the most generalized statements – is not much more than astrology. He claims success even when his predictions fail. Not content to limit his voodoo to dubious solar/weather connections, he has recently added the Moon to his “calculations”. When will the stars be next? His beef isn’t just with climate scientists, it’s with the science of meteorology. He’s been predicting cooling for years now, and it hasn’t happened. He has been claiming that “the last 7 years” have cooled for a number of years already – he just regurgitates the same 7 year figure every year and hopes (correctly when it comes to his target audience) that nobody will notice. He’s a joke. Piers Corbyn wouldn’t know what science was if it bit him on the posterior.
Here’s a reaction to the CERN experiment, from the lead author, Dr Jasper Kirkby:
It sounds like the chances are pretty low that the cosmic rays will produce particles big enough to seed clouds. I guess the next step is to try seeding clouds with similar particles in varying amounts to see the results in the real atmosphere? Or maybe bombard the atmosphere with varying amounts of EM and nuclear radiation to see if we can seed clouds? If that works, farmers would love being able to produce possible rain clouds on demand (doubtful, though).
Real skepticism means looking into this cosmic ray affect realizing it may indeed have a bit of a contribution to climate, but at the same time we don’t throw out the knowledge we have about CO2 and its primary affect on the climate record.
James Delingpole, of the UK Daily Telegraph, his reaction to the CERN Experiment is as follows:
Truly bizarre!
Perhaps James, either could not, would not understand, get or deliberately chose to ignore, Dr. Scott Denning’s latest epic message!
[epic face palm]
