Gore: Making it personal

Gore: Making it personal“. Anthony Watts is on Al Gore’s mailing list and he doesn’t like it one bit (although he may consider himself a cunning spy). Repower America is encouraging Americans to write to their Senator in support of a clean energy bill. And by write, they mean handwritten. With a pen! How can they harness the idle rage of the blogosphere that way?

If you want to look ‘big’ you’ve got to use Anthony’s method of encouraging readers to flood electronic in-boxes with easy copy-and-pasted spin, probably under as many names as possible. Kind of like the swarms of incoherent comments on media climate news web pages, or fake Freedom of Information requests Steven McIntyre orchestrated.

Although in this particular case, Anthony says “I’m only pointing out an opportunity, don’t feel obligated.

Devastating non-trends in US Climate

Devastating non-trends in US Climate“. The US government is lying to us when the Interagency Climate Change Adaptation Task Force says “Climate change is already having “pervasive, wide-ranging” effects“.

Anthony Watts knows this. So he presents Warren Meyer’s careful selection of trivial regional charts stripped of meaningful analysis and intended to convince suggestible eyeballs as a counter.

Of course the only link Anthony provides is some news coverage of the report, where his ditto-heads can flood the comments.

McIntyre accused by University of Queensland Prof of CRU break in

McIntyre accused by University of Queensland Prof of CRU break in“. Anthony Watt’s favorite Aussie crank ‘journalist’ Andrew Bolt tries to throw the “smear” accusation back at political scientist John Quiggin, who dares to complain that “Scientists have been constrained in fighting back by the fact that they are ethically constrained to be honest, whereas their opponents lie without any compunction.”

Prof. Quiggin accuses Steven McIntyre of orchestrating the Climategate leak. Where’s the evidence, cries Andrew Bolt. Anthony joins in with some practical ethics – “Somebody needs to educate Quiggin on the CRU ftp security blunder that was “the mole”. Anthony, even if your description of the ‘method of acquisition’ is correct it is still theft to take a wallet from an unlocked car.

Guess which photo Anthony chose to depict the despised Prof. Quiggin?

Ever-helpful Anthony concludes by pointing his readers to Prof. John Quiggin’s contact information to aid their harassment.

Academics fight back on climate issues

Academics fight back on climate issues“. Hoping it sticks in his reader’s throats, Anthony Watts copies and pastes a statement from mainstream academics calling for “credible science, rather than invented hyperbole”.

Guess what? His readers are enraged at the thought… Cue the flooding of in-boxes and harassment of administrative assistants.

IOP fires back over criticism of their submission to Parliament

IOP fires back over criticism of their submission to Parliament“. Anthony Watts copies and pastes an entire article from Physics World entitled Concerns raised over Institute of Physics climate submission that he thinks shows the Institute of Physics defending their widely criticized assessment of the “Climategate” issue. (Their submission was authored by their “Energy Sub-group”, which has clear links to denialist interests.) Read that article title again, Anthony!

Let’s have a look at some of the quotes from the article…

…“there is no doubt that climate change is happening, that it is linked to man-made emissions of greenhouse gases, and that we should be taking action to address it now”.

…”we are already reviewing our consultation process for preparing policy submissions”

…the IOP’s submission appears to prejudge the outcome of the inquiry

…The Institute also says it “strongly rebuts” accusations of “being overly influenced by one ‘climate-change sceptic’ on the energy sub-group

That’s rock-solid, Anthony. No wonder you’re encouraging your followers to flood the article comments section…

Doctor Gore: a good idea? – poll disagrees

Doctor Gore: a good idea? – poll disagrees“. Anthony Watts thinks an online poll attached to a Knoxville News Sentinel editorial entitled “Al Gore a fine choice for honorary degree” is proof of national contempt for Al Gore. Couldn’t be the ever-ready paranoid-obsessive goreophobe subculture leaping into action, could it? Well they’ve certainly been alerted now (there’s an almost one-to-one intersection with Anthony’s readers).

Maybe Anthony should take the editorial’s advice: “Get over it.

Quote of the week #29

Quote of the week #29“. Anthony Watts draws attention to perceived disrespect in a quote from Dr. Gavin Schmidt that points out that Steven McIntyre could have made a real contribution to climate research instead of spending five years whining about being ill-treated. This is a signal to Anthony’s followers to drown out any rational comments with a flood of denialist noise.

The article in question, Climategate’s guerrilla warriors: pesky foes or careful watchdogs, from Steven McIntyre’s hometown paper The Globe & Mail and brought to Anthony Watts’ attention by the thin-skinned one himself is actually a fairly insightful. Here’s a telling quote from it that I like better than Anthony’s (emphasis mine):

The key objection to the work of bloggers such as Mr. McIntyre is that they are engaged in an epic game of nitpicking: zeroing in on minor technical issues while ignoring the massive and converging lines of evidence that are coming in from many disciplines. To read their online work is to enter a dank, claustrophobic universe where obsessive personalities talk endlessly about small building blocks – Yamal Peninsula trees, bristlecones, weather stations – the removal of which will somehow topple the entire edifice of climate science. Lost in the blogging world is any sense of proportion, or the idea that science is built on cumulative work in many fields, the scientists say.

Amen.

U.N. Climate Chief Resigns

U.N. Climate Chief Resigns“. This is what Anthony Watts actually lives for. He knows in his heart of hearts that global warming is real and man-made. He just wants to delay action as long as possible for selfish partisan reasons.

In fact, Yvo de Boer is quitting to pursue the same climate goals by advising industrial clients directly.

This post is probably also an attempt to cement the false belief that the IPCC is part of the United Nations, a useful deception when trying to enlist isolationist Americans in your cause.

Blame it on Asia, yeah that’s the ticket

Blame it on Asia, yeah that’s the ticket“. Anthony posts a copy-and-paste of a news item in Nature, suggesting that air pollution in Asia has temporarily diminished global warming. This is usually a signal for his supporters to flood the article comments. Maybe he’s preparing the ground for the “we can fix global warming with a massive emission of pollutant that balances out the CO2 greenhouse effect” tactic.

Gather ‘Round, Compromised Journalists

Two posts in a row linking to discredited Times journalist Jonathan Leake! Methinks Anthony Watts has a new man-crush brewing. The Times: Top British scientist says IPCC is losing credibility. Sounds bad, huh? Except Leake has a record of playing for the denialist side of the climate debate. We’ll have to wait for a direct response from Dr. Watson before we can figure this one out. The second, IPCC’s “Africagate” blunder as told by Dr. Richard North, presents an IPCC critic as honest investigator when he is in fact a right-wing think tank operative completely lacking scientific expertise.

Another cold weather!!! post, Snow totals for Washington DC storm, for the stupids who need regular reminders that snow in winter proves that there is no global warming.

Tracking the Earth’s orbit: looking for warming signs is another kick at the “it’s all solar” defense by flashing a new paper by Dr. Rohling in Earth and Planetary Science Letters. The paper interprets sea-level from inferred Red Sea salinity values over time and correlates this with an orbital mechanics theory. Interesting, but surely we should look at it skeptically until we understand why it differs from so many other well-known lines of evidence? Uh oh, Dr. Rohling also explicitly states “Our study is therefore relevant to the long-term climate future, and not so much for the next decades or century.” Maybe Anthony’s audience will be too eager to notice that bit.

New study using satellite data: Alaskan glacier melt overestimated. Apparently melting Alaskan glaciers may have only produced 0.12 mm/year of sea-level rise and not 0.17 mm/year!  Problem solved.

Swapping my lights: fantastic! Anthony blogs about changing to LED light fixtures. He has a big solar array too, maybe he’s getting ready to declare a libertarian paradise? :-)

Munging Madagascar. A guest post by fellow believer Verity Jones who shows a common denialist enthusiasm for plotting numbers without having a clue about what they actually represent and is shocked that the climate conspiracy staff in Madagascar have, according to him, been lazy about sending in their made-up data.

IPCC Gate Du Jour: Aussie Droughtgate. Aussie lunatic journalist Andrew Bolt gets quoted reporting that South Australia’s drought is all down to too much durn sunshine. Take that, global warming!

UCAR: Roof white out helps UHI. Anthony is amused that scientists have studied and characterised the effect of white roofs on local temperature. I would have thought that a “skeptic” would have been a keen supporter of a careful examination of something everyone takes for granted.

Finally, NOAA’s new ‘climate service’ – not a sure thing yet lets us know that Anthony thinks we don’t need no one-stop gubmint climate information. Might get in the way of play fast and loose with the facts.
