Quote of the Week – Total Ecplise of the Moonbat

Quote of the Week – Total Ecplise of the Moonbat. Right-wing libertarian blogger Richard North pontificates that any cold weather anywhere is proof that there is no Global Warming and that George Monbiot is somehow foolish, stupid and loathsome for not understanding that. Giving him a mocking nickname, “Moonbat”, certainly caps the argument.

Anthony Watts’ nomination of EU Referendum as a well-argued denialist website is deeply educational… Yeah, nothing like cherry-picking weather news reports to try to dismantle a journalist’s climate story. It definitely proves that the mainstream climatologists are scheming liars!

Australia’s white summer, Monbiot’s red fury

Australia’s white summer, Monbiot’s red fury. Watt a surprise, Anthony Watts drawing our attention to a freak weather event in Australia. This must surely prove that there’s no Global Warming! Anthony also stretches his mental capacity to compare the size of Australia to America and to Europe. Anthony is mad that environmental reporter George Monbiot consulted “the kids at the Climate Rapid Response Team“, aka professional climate scientists, to understand this Australian weather. How dare he!

Don’t you know that if you cherry-pick a small enough smoothing radius you can make big holes appear in the global temperature data maps? I’m surprised that Anthony doesn’t try to claim that all smoothing is false and present a temperature data map with 99.9% “no data”.

Changing your color scheme to assign ‘bluer’ colors to warm temperatures also helps make things look ‘cooler’. Presumably Anthony thinks that every year those corrupt mainstream climatologists have been slightly changing their color schemes to look make the same temperatures look ‘redder’.

Hmmm... Dr. Spencer's map is pretty red. He must be in on the plot now too.

Anthony has to come up with something to distract from the fact that 2010 has proven the hottest year in the instrument record even with only a moderate El Niño influence. (Note: who cares about one year? That’s a denialist distraction. It’s the long-term trend that matters.)

Further more, we learn that the weather stations in remote Greenland communities are clearly affected by the urban heat island effect. Anthony’s speculation proves it! (Maybe this particular rant was a bit of nostalgia for the old days when Anthony regularly tried to get away with this UHI b.s.)

More satellite images of snow-bound UK

More satellite images of snow-bound UK“. Thanks Anthony. Snow! That’s it for Global Warming, huh?

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

But you forgot to exclude the truth in the press release you copy-and-pasted:

Professor John Remedios, Head of Earth Observation Science at the University of Leicester, said “These images demonstrate how much our local climate depends on a combination of the climate mean temperature in a given month and the meteorological variability which can produce very cold and very warm months. For the UK, it is another cold winter.”

I doubt his readers got that far in though, or have strong mental defense mechanisms…

UK Covered in snow, for the second winter

UK Covered in snow, for the second winter“. Well this is predictable; Anthony Watts will spend all winter shouting that any snowfall, anywhere, proves there is no Global Warming. Here’s an exciting chapter to keep the ignorant focused.

The UK is covered in snow! Well, dusted. Do you think Anthony knows that precipitation increases with temperature and snow is… precipitation? Of course he does.

You’d think that Anthony would cue in to the laughter behind his back, but his tunnel vision sees only the bobbing “skeptical” heads in front of him.

Seven Months of Winter at NCAR

Seven Months of Winter at NCAR“. Steven Goddard once again shouts about local weather to conceal the truth about climate. Here’s his evidence. Real climatologist Kevin Trenberth idly mentions a Colorado October cold snap in one of the stolen “Climategate” e-mails! A Met Office press release from ten years ago wasn’t accurate enough! Scottish ski resorts had profitable seasons! Steve’s canceled his kid’s soccer practices due to poor weather!

Funny, the real data is pretty solidly against Steven’s deceptive posturing – NASA: Easily the hottest April — and hottest Jan-April — in temperature record – Plus a new record 12-month global temperature, as predicted.

From Murphy et al. 2009.

Steven also repeats the misrepresentation of Kevin Trenberth’s “travesty” comment. Hint: it wasn’t about deceiving the public or faulty climate models. It was about insufficient instrumentation.

Same old denialist lies from Steven Goddard.

2001-2010 was the Snowiest Decade on Record

2001-2010 was the Snowiest Decade on Record“. Steven Goddard’s “guest posts” on Anthony Watt’s blog are getting embarrassing. He’s still going on about how much snow there is! He even accuses Al Gore of ineptitude. Now that’s rich… Steven, you’ve got issues. Big issues. Emotional issues as well as intellectual ones.

Steven’s data comes from the Rutgers University Global Snow Lab. The closest he comes to explaining his climate change claims is this: A decade long record across the entire Northern Hemisphere is not appropriately described as a “snowstorm.” Actually, unless Steven can slap some legitimate statistical trends on this claim it’s just as likely a “snowstorm.” He once again has bupkis. Looks like Steven’s going to have the bupkis market locked down pretty tight.

Steven's yellow line has no meaning, it's just a visual "trick" to create the illusion of an anomaly.

Ignoring the regionality of his claim, his invented threshold of 45 million km² snow extend, and the lack of any evidence of statistical significance, how does any of this undermine the factual evidence of AGW? You know the answer.

The Goracle Forecast: AGW=More snow

The Goracle Forecast: AGW=More snow“. Anthony Watts calls “the Goracle” (also known as Al Gore to non-rabid partisans) a liar for his discussion yesterday of the prediction that AGW will produce more snow during the winter.

The controversial claims?

  • Fact: Climate change causes more frequent and severe snowstorms
  • Fact: We can expect more extreme weather
  • Fact: The world is warming at a quickening pace

Anthony says that he “could spend lots of time pointing out why each one of these claims is false, and that Mr. Gore is atcually [sic] the one who is the liar“. But… he doesn’t.

Anthony does mention that it’s cold at the moment and invokes El Niño. Isn’t saying that El Niño is the cause of this year’s abnormal snow kind of admitting that the storms aren’t a disproof of global warming?

There’s no business like snow business

There’s no business like snow business“. Anthony Watts returns to the old standby of talking about how much snow there is this winter, thus ending global warming.

To make his argument he gathers selected newspaper articles from recent years predicting both less snow and more snow. Some how this tells us that climate scientists don’t know what they’re talking about. His argument would hold more weight if he actually quoted climate scientists, but that might not paint to picture he wants to present.

I see a common theme to Anthony’s cherry-picked newspaper reports; the “less snowfall” predictions refer to five to ten years out, all the “more snowfall” reports are interpreting the current winter. Not actually contradictory.
