Weekly Climate and Energy News Roundup

Weekly Climate and Energy News Roundup“. Anthony Watts uncritically regurgitates a post from the climate denialist lobbyists at the “Science and Environmental Policy Project”. Nice example of skeptical thinking…

Freaking out about NYC sea level rise is easy to do when you don’t pay attention to history

Freaking out about NYC sea level rise is easy to do when you don’t pay attention to history“. This is funny. Anthony Watts talking about “paying attention”! Apparently he’s seen some photoshopped what-if visuals on the History Channel that he thinks prove that climate scientists are liars and that the “mainstream media” is in on it too. Further more that we can adapt to anything, including Global Warming (which isn’t happening).

Armageddon!

The more trivial and less scientific something is, the more Anthony will take offense to it. His battle is entirely about the “optics” of the Global Warming debate. It’s funny though that Anthony doesn’t understand “creative license” in the media. His heroes Lord Monckton and Ian Plimer, specialize in it.

Ocean color affects tropical cyclone formation

Ocean color affects tropical cyclone formation. Another filler post from Anthony Watts, this time a press release from all the way back on 13 August about a NOAA paper titled “How ocean color can steer Pacific tropical cyclones“. I suppose this is fodder for the “them climate scientists don’t know a dang thing” file.

The climate modeling premise? “Greener” water absorbs more heat and heats the air above more, with the effect of pushing cyclones towards higher latitudes and increasing their energy. An interesting finding.

Not getting talked about #1

A reader recently encouraged me to follow-up on the idea of occasionally posting about Global Warming news or events that Anthony Watts’ blog chooses to ignore. It’s tough keeping up with the posts Anthony spews out, but now and then I recognize a small patch of enlightening silence. Here’s one now.

During my recent travels NOAA released a large peer-reviewed study published as a Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society supplement. There’s an excellent online copy with some interactive data-sets too. Anthony Watts has been strangely silent about it even though it was widely covered in the popular media:

The 2009 State of the Climate report released today draws on data for 10 key climate indicators that all point to the same finding: the scientific evidence that our world is warming is unmistakable. More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to the report, which confirms that the past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years.

NOAA's ten indicators of a warming world.

It’s all good fun getting attention by shouting about this meaningless contrary trend or that one, or by accusing climatologists of being hostile while ignoring your own vituperation. But when the evidence is lined up in a row like this… Best to keep your mouth shut and hope that your supporters forget about it.

Of course Anthony could be busy on the back-channels helping to craft a useful spin. “Whitewash”? “Data manipulation”? “Conspiracy”? We’ll see.

Arctic Forecast Verification Update

Arctic Forecast Verification Update. Arctic Sea Ice Extent has ticked upwards a bit faster than expected, so Steven Goddard has returned to arm-waving about how everything’s back to normal, just like he predicted by drawing a dashed line on some real data. Or should I say re-predicted. Oh great sage, why do you yap so much about short-term weather variables?

Vacation for Wots Up With That?

I’ll be largely out of touch for the next week, so Anthony Watts and his traveling donkey show will have one less visitor. If I can figure out how to open comments for this post, I’ll do so.

Get your ice here! New WUWT Sea Ice Machine

Get your ice here! New WUWT Sea Ice Machine. Ever the helpful researcher, Anthony Watts has collected most of the sea ice graphs and charts into one page. I guess this will help Steven Goddard create his foolish pixel arguments.

Why the sudden return of sea ice to the discussion? Well the record downward Arctic sea ice trend has stopped plummetting quite so dramatically, so clearly global warming is over.

Those ticks up and down? Weather, Anthony. The downward multi-year trend? Climate, Anthony.

Friday Funny

Friday Funny. Anthony Watts breaks himself up with a screen grab of a TV weather forecast in Albuquerque. 890° on Friday! Is that celsius or fahrenheit?

I guess it takes a lazy weatherman to spot a lazy weatherman…

The Australian’s overheated time warp misses half of 2010

The Australian’s overheated time warp misses half of 2010. Suddenly the denialist-friendly newspaper The Australian isn’t in favour with Anthony Watts. They’ve taken a press release from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center about the 2010 temperature record to date titled “June, April to June, and Year-to-Date Global Temperatures are Warmest on Record” and mistakenly applied the assessment to the entire year.

Good work magnifying a newspaper’s dropped “so far” into a scientific crisis, Anthony! But you’d better be careful tweeking the nose of your sympathizers.

Video: Guardian Climategate Debate

Video: Guardian Climategate Debate: Denialists make the most of their moment in the sun at the Guardian’s Climategate debate. Too bad they were mumbling, being pinned down on ignorant claims or ranting (in an “appropriately tough” way) about frauds and conspiracies.

That’s the great thing about sunshine, it illuminates…

Note that Anthony Watts seems to have simply posted some clumsy screen captures. He eventually links to the video, where libelous denialist statements have been redacted for legal reasons (queue the cries of “censorship!”).
