Shredding the “climate consensus” myth: More Than 1000 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims – Challenge UN IPCC & Gore

Shredding the “climate consensus” myth: More Than 1000 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims – Challenge UN IPCC & Gore. Anthony Watts’ friends at Climate Depot have a growing list of “eminent scientists” whose keen perception of climate science leads to such conclusive analyses as “the whole thing is a fraud“! There are now a thousand senile Republican curmudgeons bravely demanding to be heard! Everyone else is apparently a co-opted, indoctrinated, coward.

So, Anthony, is a thousand an increase from 400 or is it a decrease from 31,000? There are so many faked-up lists of denialist supporters that it’d hard to keep track of them all.

Upcoming paper in Nature – Greenland ice sheet melt: “it’s weather, not climate”

Upcoming paper in Nature – Greenland ice sheet melt: “it’s weather, not climate”. Anthony Watts tacks a fabricated quote onto a press release about a pending UBC paper in Nature on the behavior of Greenland’s ice-sheet. Somehow this makes the paper denialist ammunition.

So surges in meltwater can overwhelm existing drainage capacity and hence accelerate ice flow. Well, that’s it for Global Warming, isn’t it? Clearly all glacial melting is simply due to a decades-long series of random weather events.

A bill for climate data integrity: The Public Access to Historical Records Act

A bill for climate data integrity: The Public Access to Historical Records Act“. Anthony Watts tries his hand at oppressive legislation, having “a small hand” in Republican Senator David Vitter’s Public Access to Historical Records Act. Ooh, the irony!

Senator Vitter is a creationist Tea Party supporter who “received forgiveness from God” for patronizing the “D.C. Madam” (and probably the “Canal Street Madam“). With Anthony’s help he is trying to introduce a bill hoping to show that NASA is manipulating temperature records.

American taxpayers are apparently being forced to spend billions, each year, on climate change research! Gosh that sounds awful, in an unspecific way.

NASA’s temperature records must be open to public scrutiny! Um, NASA has never collected historical temperature records, the NCDC however does collect it. NASA uses the NCDC’s data, their processed data is here.

These historical temperature records must be protected from political agendas! Amen to that, although I don’t trust Vitter to define it honestly.

So Anthony helped write a bill designed to give political appointees authority over the official US temperature record and to force scientists to use only that dataset? Anthony suddenly loves Gubmint and legislated truth! Has Obama the Nigerian crypto-communist got to him? What happened to the independent skeptic we all loved?

Why am I surprised that Anthony would be proudly involved in something so ill-conceived?

Season’s Greetings!

It’s cold here in Canada this Christmas, so I must conclude that Anthony Watts is right. Global Warming isn’t happening! I’m so embarrassed! My faith in mainstream climatology was woefully misplaced, I was trapped by my partisan world-view.

Not!

2010 has been an interesting year. Back in January I finally had my fill of Anthony’s deception and decided that someone needed to try to call him out on each of his posts. That was the genesis of this website. I’ve had mixed success in keeping up with him and his team of contributors. However it’s been very satisfying sitting on the sidelines watching Anthony declare “victory!” with each scientific defeat. I hope that this website will form a lasting record of his dishonesty and scientific obstinacy. Undoubtably he’ll eventually refocus on some similarly ill-conceived libertarian cause.

I face 2011 with a new determination in part because of the support and encouragement I have received through this website, both through the comments and privately. I’ve realized however that I need to follow Anthony’s example and recruit contributors.

No, I’m not’ reaching out’ to outcasts that even Anthony could no longer tolerate (I’m looking at you Steven Goddard). I’m going to see if I can use WordPress’ group editing functions to speed up responses to Anthony’s posts. Maybe I’ll be contacting you shortly!

Cancun COP16 attendees fall for the old “dihydrogen monoxide” petition as well as signing up to cripple the U.S. Economy

Cancun COP16 attendees fall for the old “dihydrogen monoxide” petition as well as signing up to cripple the U.S. Economy. More juvenile political stunts by “CFACT students” at the UN conference in Cancun. They seem to be the same Grade 3 wits that Lord Monckton was so taken with a few days before.

Yes, random people can be tricked into signing pretty much anything. Yes, this kind of ambush passes for intellectual triumph in the denialist blogosphere.

As I said before, where’s the science here? This is desperate political dirty tricks, and Anthony’s all for it.

“Gore effect” strikes Cancun Climate Conference 3 days in a row

“Gore effect” strikes Cancun Climate Conference 3 days in a row. Anthony Watts thinks a dumb political remark by the “skeptical” Dr. Roy Spencer, in Cancun on a political mission for a lobbying group (CFACT), is worth noting. Does Dr. Spencer really think that the possible secret presence of Al Gore is triggering a cold spell in Cancun?

I thought that “skeptics” were adamant that scientists should keep out of politics, but apparently the goose and the gander get different sauces after-all.

Arsenic and post-haste: another example of the broken peer review process turned “science by press release”

Arsenic and post-haste: another example of the broken peer review process turned “science by press release”. A NASA news report made an eye-opening announcement about “an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life.” Arsenic-based bacterium were found by astrobiologists in Mono Lake, suggesting that we should widen our search criteria for extraterrestrial life. Turns out that the scientist’s conclusions may be flawed. They’re probably just a regular phosphate-based bacterium that can tolerate high arsenic concentrations. Interesting though.

Anthony Watts’ take on this? Maybe that the scientific publication process catches these kinds of problems? No. Maybe that results that aren’t approved by the existing, and oppressive, “consensus” can be published? No.

Anthony’s conclusion is that scientists are defensive egotists. And that “peer review” failed, somehow. Therefore scientific criticism of denialism must also be flawed.

Guess what, Anthony. That was science in action, not blog-blather. Scientists reported their discovery, other scientists examined it skeptically, knowledge was advanced. One “tribe” didn’t defeat the other. Publication of results isn’t the finish line, it’s the first lap.

Can Anthony really say that “NASA again has egg of [sic] their faces”? No. He’s just trying to opportunistically smear this minor controversy over to the field he’s trying to discredit NASA in.

NASA climate model shows plants slow Global Warming by creating a new negative feedback in response to increased CO2

NASA climate model shows plants slow Global Warming by creating a new negative feedback in response to increased CO2. Anthony Watts thinks that NASA has accidentally revealed that Global Warming, which isn’t happening, will “naturally” slow because of plant physiology.

But I thought that plants loved CO2, the gas that’s “essential to life!” Could it be that there’s less to this story than meets the eye? Italics mine:

Bounoua stressed that while the model’s results showed a negative feedback, it is not a strong enough response to alter the global warming trend that is expected. In fact, the present work is an example of how, over time, scientists will create more sophisticated models that will chip away at the uncertainty range of climate change and allow more accurate projections of future climate.

Of  course any time there is an improvement in climate modeling Anthony’s readers howl that it’s proof that them durn scientists don’t know nuthin’ and we should wait – forever – until they finally figure it all out. Or that scientists need to start listening to the “wisdom of the bloggers.”

Massive solar filament eruption captured by SDO

Massive solar filament eruption captured by SDO. Anthony Watts re-posts a smattering of information about a dramatic solar event recorded on December 6th by the Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Something happening on the sun! Source: SDO.

I’m surprised Anthony didn’t take exception to the dramatized depiction of solar activity on the SDO website header. Scientists are liars, after-all.

Monckton’s Mexican Missive #2

Monckton’s Mexican Missive #2“. Denialist blowhard Lord Monckton, rattling around the UN climate conference in Cancun waiting for supplicants to seek out his guidance, provides another rambling “report” about how everyone at the Conference is stupid. And evil. And mean. And blindly “religious.” And demoralized. And conspiring. The list seems endless. Anthony Watts gives it all his seal of approval.

And yet this unsupported repetition of a wide list of debunked denialist claims and allegations of conspiracy, along with a random political broadsides and references to his dinner menu, are all we get from the leading “intellectual” of the denialist movement… What a train-wreck.

Monckton reaches his pinnacle of cleverness when he encourages people to call the “wicked” IPCC the “ipecac”. Oh, if we use the name of syrup of ipecac instead of their real name no one will take them seriously! They’ll just think of throwing up! Oh you are by far the cleverest guy in Grade Three and your readers are, tellingly, quivering with delight.
