Skating on the Other Side of the Ice

Skating on the Other Side of the Ice“. Willis Eschenbach returns with an unfounded claim that “for reasons which are not well understood, when one pole warms, the other pole cools.” This is used to justify a belief that sea ice changes balance out between the polar regions (they don’t). Unsurprisingly, the focus is on less definitive sea ice extent, with no mention of the important documented changes in sea ice volume.

The Arctic and Antarctic sea ice environments have substantially different characteristics, so even suggesting that their responses are linked is naïve (or disingenuous). The Arctic sea ice is thinner and partly land-locked. The Antarctic sea ice is thicker, partly driven by glacier outflow, and exposed to ocean circulation.

Why does Willis think the sea ice trends balance out? “The short answer is that we don’t know“. He does offer some suggestions based on an unproven cosmic ray theory or “eddies” in the ocean circulation patterns. Ah. So the post offers neither evidence nor explanation.

The insight that Willis offers on global sea ice trends is…

Nothing.

England’s Five Year Climate Forecast Cycle

England’s Five Year Climate Forecast Cycle“. Steven Goddard has England on his mind these days. He’s irritated that the Met Office’s predictions have changed. Is there anything more galling than climate predictions changing to incorporate new theories or more refined understandings? I didn’t think so.

The single day that the UK was covered in snow.

‘Foamenting’ climate change

‘Foamenting’ climate change“. Anthony Watts finds, and pastes in, a geo-engineering article in AAAS that suggests that even if global warming is happening (it isn’t of course because it’s all a trick) we can fix it by spreading micro-bubbles throughout the oceans. Thus solving the Global Warming problem once and for all.

I can’t believe that Anthony set himself up for a punch-line from Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth!

Solving Global Warming once and for all!

There are good reasons for caution about geo-engineering solutions. Here are a few.

  • We have little idea of what the unexpected consequences might be for these interventions.
  • They will almost certainly be wildly expensive and/or disruptive.
  • They encourage increased CO2 generation that will eventually overwhelm the each geo-engineering solution.

Earth Hour in North Korea a stunning success

Earth Hour in North Korea a stunning success“. Anthony Watts laughs at the Commies because they don’t have much ‘lectricity. That one sentence says more than Anthony’s whole post.

Proof that environmentalists are Commies.

Belief in climate change tumbles in Germany

Belief in climate change tumbles in Germany“. Anthony Watts enjoys the confusion generated by the debunked denialist accusations about the IPCC’s last report. A brief Speigel Online article states that “fear” of climate change has dropped in Germany because of it. Think it will stick? Does Anthony think that psychological acclimatization isn’t a reason, or that climate change will reverse because of polling numbers?

Also the “respected German Leibniz research community” (they’re biologists and biochemists) want IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri to resign because of the same debunked accusations. Whatever!

Tracking Earth Hour in the Greenest State

Tracking Earth Hour in the Greenest State“. Anthony Watts disparages the 2010 Earth Hour, a world-wide power consumption awareness campaign by the World Wildlife Federation. Here in Ontario, Canada there was a 4% reduction between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM on March 27th.

Not good enough for Anthony, hence there’s nothing we can do about Climate Change.

Energy Star-t Your Engines

Energy Star-t Your Engines“. Anthony Watts reports that the US Energy Star certification process can be manipulated! There is “massive fraud in the EPA/DOE Energy Star Program“! The New York Times says so!

Actually no, just Anthony says so. In fact, Congressional investigators found that they could apply for Energy Star certifications for 15 fictitious devices (5 others were rejected), but have no evidence that widespread misrepresentation has occurred. See the difference?

This of course means that there is no global warming. And if there is, its hopeless trying to do anything about it so lets oppose oppressive governmental regulation.

Tropical England

Tropical England“. Steven Goddard returns with some insight into an information campaign by the UK’s National Trust. They warn that predicted temperature rises due to AGW will lead to dramatic changes in England’s vegetation and crops. Think Portugal; drier and without pastureland. Steven says they’ll love it! This is the “what if climate change is good?” approach.

An English Garden in 2080 with a 4°C rise? © Rob Collins.

After an obligatory round of weather forecast bashing, he waves away England’s 0.5°C of warming as “likely due to UHI effects” but neglects to offer any statistical basis for his unsubstantiated claim.

So there hasn’t been any warming, but if there is warming it’s going to be nice. Have I got that right Steven?
