Catlin Team Averaging 1.7 Miles Per Day – Only 295 Miles Left to Go!

Catlin Team Averaging 1.7 Miles Per Day – Only 295 Miles Left to Go!” Anthony Watts offers more petty sniping (and uncredited image usage) at the Catlin Arctic Survey team. Apparently they’re not moving fast enough for him and their ice measurements haven’t been scientifically random enough. Maybe Anthony will show us how a plump, but red-blooded, San Diegan does it?

Of course Anthony knows that they are traveling against the movement of the ice and thus their progress is pretty much one step forward, one step back. This has been a reality for every Arctic journey heading north from the Canadian Arctic Islands for the last hundred years. Some years surface expeditions actually lose ground! But that doesn’t suit his condescending intentions, does it?

WUWT Status report – 40 million

WUWT Status report – 40 million” Anthony Watts blows his own horn over his web stats, claiming the status of “the most visited climate science blog in the world” and in the process admits that he’s “resorted to posting a lot of press releases rather than analysis and commentary” owing to “a period of exhaustion and illness”.

Yet somehow in spite of this elevated status traffic has slowed to about half since December, his revenues are down, and he’s going to have to start posting more ads.

Joe Romm over at Climate Progress handily dissects Anthony’s statistical “trick”. “Memo to Watts: “Hits” are what people use when they want to hype or inflate their webstats.” The only stat Anthony provides in support of his claim is a dubious Alexa statistic for “Daily Reach”. 40 million total hits also doesn’t seem to hold up so well to Climate Progress’ own stat of 20 million in the first three months of 2010, but as Joe says “hits” are a deceptive benchmark.

This stat doesn't look as good as the one Anthony touts...

Earth follows the warming: soils add 100 million tons of CO2 per year

Earth follows the warming: soils add 100 million tons of CO2 per year“. Another press release copy-and-paste from Anthony Watts. This time from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory headlined “Soils release more carbon dioxide as globe warms“.

I guess Anthony’s implication is ‘something else that isn’t included in those stupid climate models’! I see reports like this and infer that the “stupid climate models” are too conservative in their conclusions.

GISScapades

GISScapades“. Willis Eschenbach tries to support Joe Bastardi’s ignorance with accusations about Arctic surface station temperature extrapolation. It boils down to this claim: “No data available? No problem, just build in some high temperatures …

Willis can make up some number series that show decent correlations, which is very clever of him. But it doesn’t undermine the fact that the surface station data used to represent the Arctic Ocean is real. His chart also deliberately minimizes the legitimate overlap of the two dozen surface stations that are used to extrapolate into the Arctic Ocean. There is no theoretical surface station being generated in the center of the Arctic Ocean as Willis tries to insinuate.

The most damning thing that Willis can actually say at the end of all this is (bolding mine): “Their trends may not be similar at all.” All that waving of charts and polar maps, and this is what it boils down to?

Quadruple those surface station ranges and tell me how poorly represented the Arctic Ocean is (from wattsupwiththat).

Of course if you want to avoid the extrapolation, just use a different data set. There are several. They show similar results regardless of whether they include extrapolations for the unavailable Arctic Ocean temperature data.

Or you could use satellite data and avoid the whole issue.

Ice Station Ztupid

Ice Station Ztupid“. Anthony Watts tries to put words into the mouths of the Catlin Arctic Survey and mocks them for reporting about arctic weather conditions. Nothing he hates more than someone reporting real field data, even if it is just anecdotal.

Anthony provides this quote “they want us to think that carbon dioxide caused the “recently refrozen open water” that they’ve seen“, but its a bogus accusation. He also points out that they’ve been dealing with intense cold. Why does he think that “global warming” means that it should be warm everywhere? Oh, Anthony.

Can anyone see a surface station?

Arctic sea ice continues to rise past the normal peak date

Arctic sea ice continues to rise past the normal peak date“. Anthony Watts steps in for Steven Goddard to make irrational statements about Arctic sea ice extent. It’s still increasing, as it obviously does each winter, but it’s now risen to just within two standard deviations of the “normal” extent! This proves that everything will be fine.

The Arctic Sea Ice Extent isn't nearly as far below normal as its been!

Talk of Arctic sea ice volume is curiously absent from Anthony’s post. I wonder why.

Spoofing the climate of news

Spoofing the climate of news“. Anthony Watts enjoys some grade-school climate change snark at The Spoof’s website.

Here’s an example of what tickles Anthony’s funny-bone: “Dr. Pachauri spoke briefly to other reporters before posing for more photographs, and was then whisked off in his motorcade to a special meeting of the Railway Engineers Society of India, where he’s to be given a lifetime service award.”

How will he react when he discovers Dramatic Prairie Dog? Or Star Wars Kid? Or LOLcats?

Now this is funny!

Skeptic-Warmer networking update with no update?

Skeptic-Warmer networking update with no update?” Anthony Watts returns to the “Skeptical Network / Supporter’s Network” topic, but ironically doesn’t add anything other than a few idle boasts either.

Bengal Island succumbs to global warming nonsense – AP gets nutty over the loss of a sandbar

Bengal Island succumbs to global warming nonsense – AP gets nutty over the loss of a sandbar“. A newspaper suggests that a tiny island in the Bay of Bengal has sunk below sea-level due to “global warming”. This sets Anthony Watts and Steven Goddard off on a rant that sea-level change can be due to sea-level rise or surface subsidence.

This is true! There are a number of local factors that affect “sea-level” in either direction. Sediment compaction. Erosion. Sediment deposition. Changes in ocean circulation patterns. Storm activity. Glacial rebound. Earthquakes. Plate tectonics. What does this have to do with global sea-level changes? Nothing.

Next up is the discovery of an ancient city 36 metres below sea-level off India’s western coast. Anthony says “How many Hummers were they driving 9,000 years ago?  Chalk up another clueless AGW claim.” I guess Anthony and Steven haven’t heard of earthquakes.

It’s the denialists who are trying to build the straw-man argument that global warming is the only recognized source of sea-level change. Real scientists know better.

WUWT makes a difference – London Science Museum changes their climate change exhibit

WUWT makes a difference – London Science Museum changes their climate change exhibit“. Anthony is delighted that he was able to hijack an unscientific online poll at the London Science Museum. That’s the denialist raison d’être; make enough noise to attract notice, throw out enough misrepresentations to drown the honest science.

The Times is happy to throw its weight behind the hijack with this article: Public scepticism prompts Science Museum to rename climate exhibition. Just as it did with Jonathan Leake’s false accusation of the IPCC about the Amazon rainforest’s response to drought.

Funny, the vote chart doesn't show the early voting trend, before the denialist hijack. Cherry-picking?
