Botanist claims to overturn established ocean phytoplankton theory – cites global warming as a concern for new theory

Botanist claims to overturn established ocean phytoplankton theory – cites global warming as a concern for new theory. Whew. Anthony Watts can sleep again. Global warming has been disproved! Again. Somehow. In a paper by an Oregon State University botanist (Abandoning Sverdrup’s critical depth hypothesis on phytoplankton blooms). So Anthony instinctively copies and pastes the press release.

Phytoplankton

Eurekalert has a press release about Dr. Behrenfeld’s research, which suggests that phytoplankton blooms occur at a greater range of depths and seasonal than previously recognized. Well that settles it!

Uh oh, Anthony didn’t even understand the for-dummies press release:

The critical depth hypothesis would suggest that a warmer climate would increase ocean productivity. Behrenfeld’s new hypothesis suggests the opposite.

Climatic collision on the National/Financial Post website

Climatic collision on the National/Financial Post website. Anthony Watts is busy deleting contacts from his Rolodex and trying to frame the sudden and unwelcome media scrutiny of global warming denialism as part of the Climategate “whitewash” and the alleged “blacklist” of denialists.

Canada’s National Post newspaper, a long-time source and also re-distributor of climate science misinformation, has for the first time printed an intelligent and skeptical assessment of the global warming denial position. Jonathan Kay’s article Bad Science: Global Warming Deniers are a Liability to the Conservative Cause is an entertaining exposé of many of the smug deceptions that the Post’s own doctrinaire columnists, such as Terrence Corcoran, have been regurgitating for years. Quite a startling development. Kay’s telling quote is this:

How has this tiny 2-3% sliver of fringe opinion been reinvented as a perpetually “growing” share of the scientific community?

Columnist Terrence Corcoran naturally has taken exception to having the plug pulled on his cozy bubble-bath. Bad politics The politicization of climate science reaches new low with the development of a deniers blacklist is his response. Strangely, he starts with a reference to the “first principles of good science” before blustering at length about a “scientific mop-and-pail crew”, talking about the astrological signs of the paper’s authors and trying to imply that compiling the alleged “denialist blacklist” was a stealthy librul operation. Actually, the list of denialist scientists was collected from documents published and distributed by denialist lobbyists. But bluster on, Terrence.

Anthony declares that of the two columns “One in my opinion, [is] ugly, the other matter of fact.” No prize for guessing which one Anthony likes.

CO2 Optical Illusion

CO2 Optical Illusion. Steven Goddard is nothing if not stubborn. He still thinks that graphics editors can be used to prove that Global Warming is a lie. NASA’s Earth Observatory image of the day has him all riled up.

Here he once again mangles legitimate scientific images and then counts pixels to prove… something. Although he admits that “This is not a perfect equal area projection – so the pixel count method is not 100% accurate” it doesn’t stop him from speaking from the mountaintop. He declares that “5% more pixels were below normal than were above normal” but ignores the unreported areas (most of India and China) that almost all lie within hotter than normal regions.

Pixels, eh Steven? I think you’re actually looking at pixies. I suppose it makes a change from arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Friday Funny

Friday Funny. Anthony Watts breaks himself up with a screen grab of a TV weather forecast in Albuquerque. 890° on Friday! Is that celsius or fahrenheit?

I guess it takes a lazy weatherman to spot a lazy weatherman…

A spot check on NOAA’s “hottest so far” presser

A spot check on NOAA’s “hottest so far” presser. Anthony Watts tries to undercut NOAA’s 2010 temperature record analysis by pointing out Heartland Institute presenter and global warming dissembler Dr. Richard Keen’s observation that Coal Creek Canyon in Colorado, which lies outside the +4°F contour of the map below in spite of his claim otherwise, only has an anomaly of +1°F. Why that’s almost a decrease! Except it isn’t.

Ignore the Red States? Really Anthony!

That might work as an exercise in cherry-picking and arm-waving bluster over NOAA’s analysis, but it doesn’t work in support of the endlessly bellowed denialist claim that there is no Global Warming, does it?

At least Dr. Keen doesn’t repeat the idiotic claim that increased snowfall reflects lower temperatures.

NOAA: behind the curve

NOAA: behind the curve. Anthony Watts delights that NOAA’s sunspot number projections aren’t exactly  the same as the observed count.

NOAA Sunspot Cycle Prediction, July 2010

You tell ’em Anthony.

From DMSP munching microbes to global climate

From DMSP munching microbes to global climate. Anthony Watts has found a press release about a paper by Justin Seymour of The University of Technology Sydney. Did you know that “Observations show that microorganisms display a behaviour characteristic of larger animals.”? Dimethylsulfide (DMSP) helps marine microorganisms find food (or prey on those microorganisms)!

Seymour’s paper seems trivial from a climate science perspective, but this post seems to be just an opportunity to encourage commenters to rubbish a scientific paper that happens to mention climate change impacts.

The Australian’s overheated time warp misses half of 2010

The Australian’s overheated time warp misses half of 2010. Suddenly the denialist-friendly newspaper The Australian isn’t in favour with Anthony Watts. They’ve taken a press release from NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center about the 2010 temperature record to date titled “June, April to June, and Year-to-Date Global Temperatures are Warmest on Record” and mistakenly applied the assessment to the entire year.

Good work magnifying a newspaper’s dropped “so far” into a scientific crisis, Anthony! But you’d better be careful tweeking the nose of your sympathizers.

Video: Guardian Climategate Debate

Video: Guardian Climategate Debate: Denialists make the most of their moment in the sun at the Guardian’s Climategate debate. Too bad they were mumbling, being pinned down on ignorant claims or ranting (in an “appropriately tough” way) about frauds and conspiracies.

That’s the great thing about sunshine, it illuminates…

Note that Anthony Watts seems to have simply posted some clumsy screen captures. He eventually links to the video, where libelous denialist statements have been redacted for legal reasons (queue the cries of “censorship!”).

Peer reviewed science: Polar bears of the past survived warmth

Peer reviewed science: Polar bears of the past survived warmth: A University of Alaska article about a fossilized polar bear jawbone, called “Polar bears of the past survived warmth“, lets Anthony Watts show his sensitive tree-hugger side:

So next time you have somebody sniffling and tearing up over polar bears and sea ice, show them this research and hand them a Kleenex. Now, they can worry about the polar bears eating hippos in the future.

I guess he didn’t bother reading the article he’s waving around as surly proof:

“Refugia” are places that polar bears may survive without ice. The Svalbard Archipelago may have been one of those places. Biologists today think polar bears would have a difficult time living on land, because other species like the grizzly bear could outcompete them.

The warm period of the Eemian might have come at a time when the polar bear wasn’t such an ice specialist, Talbot says.

Is this what a denialist slam-dunk looks like? Anthony should stick to snickering over inaccurate polar bear illustrations created by graphic artists.
