UAH global temperature anomaly, a bit cooler in April

UAH global temperature anomaly, a bit cooler in April“. Dr. Roy Spencer tells us that the global temperature anomaly has dropped a bit, according to the UAH satellite data. So Global Warming is over! Because every month must be warmer than the previous one if Global Warming is true, right?

April's down a bit, so Global Warming's over!

Well, statistically the global temperature anomaly is still rising, but whatever…

New paper: Tropical cyclone response to solar UV

New paper: Tropical cyclone response to solar UV“. Anthony Watts posts parts of a Geophysical Research Letters paper, Daily tropical cyclone intensity response to solar ultraviolet radiation by three geographers at Florida State University, about cyclone intensity over the Caribbean and an inverse relationship to the number of sunspots (full copy here). The “compelling” hypothesis is that it is changes in UV radiation that are significant and not Total Solar Insolation (TSI). No real-world physical model is offered to explain it.

Here’s the quote from the conclusions that Anthony likes, because it can be waved about to suggest that climate change is all due to the sun:

a tropical cyclone can act to amplify the effect on the Earth’s climate of a relatively small change in solar output.

More local evidence used to infer global meaning. More grasping at straws for a random theory to magically “prove” humans aren’t contributing to Global Warming. Anther shiny thing to swing back and forth in front of Anthony’s readers.

Sun’s magnetics coming alive again

Sun’s magnetics coming alive again“. The Sun’s geomagnetic activity has ticked upwards after about five years of general decline. Anthony Watts wants denialist followers to think that this is a reason to expect global cooling. Just wait a bit longer… It’s coming, really!

AGW to reach…”The Edge of Wetness”…

AGW to reach…”The Edge of Wetness”… Super-hip Anthony Watts references the Johnny Carson Show to attempt a put down a press release about a paper (An Adaptability Limit to Climate Change Due to Heat Stress) that suggests the following:

Despite the uncertainty in future climate change impacts, it is often assumed that humans would be able to adapt to any possible warming. Here we argue that heat stress imposes a robust upper limit to such adaptation.

Maximum wet-bulb temperatures from a climate scenario with mean temperature 12°C warmer than 2007. Land areas >~34°C exceed the wet-bulb limit of potentially lethal heat stress. (Purdue University/Matthew Huber)

Here’s Anthony’s snappy comeback in its entirety: “Apparently it’s not just the heat, but the humidity too.” Now that’s what I call critical thinking. How is considering the possible impact of a particular level of warming a bad thing?

Fox News uses WUWT

Fox News uses WUWT“. Anthony Watts delights that Fox News is treating WUWT as a reliable news source, in this instance using posted photos of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig disaster.

This says as much about Fox News’ scientific credibility as it does about Anthony’s political enthusiasms.

500,000 km2 Discrepancy Between NSIDC and NORSEX

500,000 km2 Discrepancy Between NSIDC and NORSEX“. More confusion from Steve Goddard. NSIDC is clearly falsifying the Arctic Sea Ice Extent data because their trend is different from the ArcticROOS one (NORSEX)! It’s lower and dropping faster. This is ‘conclusively’ proven by taking the Sea Ice Extent graphs published by the two agencies and distorting them with a graphics editor.

Um, the two agencies define Sea Ice Extent differently.

Steven seem to think he can draw meaningful conclusions from squeezing and stretching JPG files in Photoshop. That just about sums up his scientific contribution.

Seeing red: jobs initiative to limit California’s AB32 greenhouse gas law will be on the November ballot

Seeing red: jobs initiative to limit California’s AB32 greenhouse gas law will be on the November ballot“. Anthony Watts excerpts a news report about a proposed ballot initiative from the ‘California Jobs Initiative Coalition’ to suspend some of California’s environmental standards “until the economy rebounds”.

Somehow the recession is all the evil environmentalists’ fault. They’re trying to take our jobs away! Even previously reliable Republicans like former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz are starting to fall for it. Shudder!

Republican Assemblyman Dan Logue says this is “about small business taking a stand for jobs” but that proves not to be the case as this quote, which Anthony helpfully excluded from his post, shows:

The ballot initiative is largely being funded by Texas oil companies that oppose climate regulations in California and similar legislation moving through Congress. Valero Services Inc. has given $500,000, while Tesoro Cos. has given $275,000. [Grass Valley Union. Italics mine.]

Nothing like a little deceitful astroturfing.

Scripps plans for saving the planet

Scripps plans for saving the planet“. Anthony Watts posts a Scripps Institute press release about a proposed approach to limiting global warming.

Recommended steps include stabilizing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere, and fashioning warming-neutral pollution laws that will balance the removal of aerosols that have an atmospheric cooling effect with the removal of warming agents such as soot and ozone. Finally, the authors advocate achieving reductions in methane, hydrofluorocarbons and other greenhouse gases that remain in the atmosphere for short periods of time. The authors write that aggressive simultaneous pursuit of these strategies could reduce the probability of reaching the temperature threshold to less than 10 percent before the year 2050. [Quote from original press release, italics mine.]

These proposals outrage Anthony’s readers, who pick through it for sentences they can pour scorn on. The best solution is, of course, to do nothing.

WUWT Arctic Sea Ice News #3

Merry Old Santa. Source: Wikipedia

WUWT Arctic Sea Ice News #3“. Anthony Watts distracts from the fact that the Arctic Sea Ice Extent is declining very normally and will likely reach a minimum that is once again lower than “normal”.

I don’t think a link to a Wikipedia image of Santa and a meandering sequence of ice charts is enough though.

Are these weekly sea ice updates a way to desensitize Anthony’s followers to the importance of sea ice changes, or just an irrelevant way of boosting traffic?

A multi question poll on Real Climate

A multi question poll on Real Climate“. Anthony Watts believes that hundreds of denialists obsessively refreshing the comments of his posts so they can shout down people who disagree with them is proof that his website is the best. That’s basically what the Alexa statistics he touts show. He’s way better than those climatologist jerks at Real Climate and better even than that nutty physicist at Climate Progress.

Now he has more supporting evidence. Jeff Id at The Air Vent has created a series of goofball polls asking his loyal denialist readers if they think that Real Climate is mean or stupid. Why can’t they pick mean and stupid?

So now we know who make Anthony and Jeff Id squirm the most. Real Climate and Climate Progress, in their different ways, are both doing something right.
