“A surprising change in the ‘eye roller’ public slogan of NOAA“. Anthony Watts takes note of an important change in the NOAA mission statement. What was once:

“NOAA understands and predicts changes in the Earth’s environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and conserves and manages our coastal and marine resources.”

is now this:

“NOAA’s mission is to understand and predict changes in the Earth’s environment, from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the sun, and to conserve and manage our coastal and marine resources.”

Oohh, that’s the first crack in the armor for Anthony. They’re admitting that they don’t have perfect knowledge! Next they’ll be admitting that they made everything up all along!

My head is spinning, my world has been rocked.

“Hyperventilating on Venus“. More juicy idiocy from Steve Goddard! I’m starting to love this guy. Steve is pondering why Venus is so hot. First he tells us that Carl Sagan, who popularized the concept of the ‘runaway greenhouse effect’, smoked marijuana. Next he tells us that sunlight doesn’t reach the surface of Venus because of thick clouds. Then that Venus is twice as reflective as Earth. So why is Venus hot? “Because it has an extremely high atmospheric pressure“! Not because of the 96% CO2 atmosphere blocking re-radiation. Not because it receives twice the solar radiation as Earth. He must be right, because weirdo Lubos Motl agrees with him…

End of story. Well… not really. This is stupid on several levels but time is short so I’ll just point you to Tamino’s Open Mind blog for some quick insight.

I’ll note that Steve inadvertently admits that “Each doubling of CO2 increases temperatures by 2-3C.” Stay on message Steve!

“Russian scientist suggests colder times ahead, cites UHI as a worry“. My gosh, Anthony Watts has proof that there’s no Global Warming! It’s all Urban Heat Island effect, which no-one has ever noticed. Just ask Oleg Pokrovsky from the Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory.

He apparently claims, on the basis of nothing, that there has been a 12 year “Arctic cold snap” that no-one has noticed. They’ve all been tricked by those lyin’ thermometers in the US which are merely showing UHI effects. Eye-roll.

“New book from Dr. Roy Spencer“. Anthony Watts gives us the press release for Dr. Roy Spencer’s new book entitled (with great hubris) “The Great Global Warming Blunder: How Mother Nature Fooled the World’s Top Climate Scientists“. Dr. Spencer is widely known as an enthusiastic denialist whose own blunders are well recorded.

The press release is a comically amateur effort at convincing and not describing. Get a load of this random unsubstantiated bunk (italics mine):

Believe it or not, this potential natural explanation for recent warming has never been seriously researched by climate scientists. The main reason they have ignored this possibility is that they cannot think of what might have caused it.

There are tens of thousands of papers discussing natural forcings in climatology. Here’s another juicy bit (italics Dr. Spencer’s):

But in Blunder I address what other scientists should have the courage to admit: that maybe putting more CO2 in the atmosphere is a good thing.

Man, that’s so 2008.

You have to love headings like “NATURE’S SUNSHADE: CLOUDS” and “CARBON DIOXIDE: FRIEND OR FOE?” too. I’m having flashbacks to my Grade Eight science project.

“From Bonn with Love“. Oooh, this is good. Anthony Watts has posted a blog and video from Count Chocula, I mean The Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (“Global Warming Expert”) talking about tolerance! In particular, the lack of it in others. Monckton was recently famous for calling Jewish environmentalists “Nazis”. Butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth…

He’s also mad that the wealthy nations will foot the bill for an extra two weeks of climate pre-negotiation time in Mexico this December. Taxpayer’s money wasted! Of course the urgency comes from the need to complete the secret ‘world government’ before everyone realises that the whole Climate Change thing is just a made-up excuse to get the real ball rolling.

Also those African delegates can be so cute with their ” charming, old-world courtliness”. Except those “two messily-dressed ladies of uncertain age, with untidy hairdos and a hectoring, bossy manner”.

Count Chocula warns America. Love, love, LOVE the tie!

The video is basically a warning to America that the World Gubmint is coming to take away their freedoms. For no good reason at all.

Dr. Ravetz returns to the politics of Anthony Watts’ blog, but after some self-referential meanderings only manages to stick his other foot in his mouth while trying to ingratiate himself into the denialist good books by making an unsupportable reference to the “corrupted science of the CRU“.

Dr. Ravetz, please keep you mouth shut unless you know what you’re talking about! Better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it.

Even Steven Goddard chokes when the lunatic right-wing web site “The American Thinker”, which presumably he finds otherwise agreeable, tries to add to their roster of birther/muslim conspiracy theories by claiming that the decline in the Arctic sea ice extent has (naturally through a “trick”) been deliberately overstated.

Yes, the satellites for reasons of orbital mechanics can’t overfly the real north and south poles. No, that doesn’t mean that there are large stretches of open water concealed from our view at the north pole in the dead of winter.

Classic “Tea Party” mentality, which is so, so close to the denialist mentality.

  1. Choose desired conclusion (government is evil/earth not warming).
  2. Find something that you think might support your desired conclusion.
  3. Cling to it in spite of all contrary evidence and logic.
